Roddy completed his annual set of Edinburgh University graduations in the middle of a heatwave this year. Almost 10000 graduates went through the doors over 7 days and Roddy’s playing brought a great Scottish atmosphere to the events, which was especially enjoyed by the foreign alumni.

We put on a Reel Time spectacle for this years Hogmanay celebrations at Marriott Dalmahoy. The Guests enjoyed some traditional highland dancing during dinner before the Reel Time Ceilidh band got the guests on the packed dance floor. For the bells, a 6 piece pipe band joined the Ceilidh band for an awesome entrance into 2009. Happy New Year to all who made such an effort making this a great event.

We had some great fun at a recent foreign festive wedding at Borthwick castle. The family had taken over the castle with their closest friends to celebrate their wedding. Graham Carnie was the photographer for the evening and has sent us through some great shots.
You can find more of Grahams work at his website: www.grahamcarniephotography.co.uk

Yes, quite literally. I had an interesting incident at a wedding last Saturday, when piping guests in for dinner. While passing a candle in a tall flower display, my feather hat caught alight. Luckily toastmaster John Smith was on hand to extinguish the flames. Luckily no one was hurt, but I now have a fairly worthless non feather bonnet! Fellow pipers please take note.

As part of BBC radio comedy, we recorded a program during the festival, Danny Robins Musical therapy, to see whether bagpipes were appropriate at all times of the day!
Lovely to let a family have a personal piper for the day.

The Reel Time ceilidh band entertained guests up at Fairmont Hotel St Andrews last Friday night. Visit Scotland had organised a night for the Scottish Ambassador Programme, who help to attract the conference market to Scotland as a destination. Guests were keen to show off their ceilidh dancing prowess, and a great time was enjoyed by all.

I was taken across to Odessa, Ukraine, for the opening of a Scotch whisky lovers Paradise. This new build pub, Corvin, can hold 200 guests, who can sample from the 800 malt whiskies behind the bar. They have put in 2 whisky stills, as well as a ‘working’ spirit safe. I played for the Launch night (comically called a night with Roddy Deans!) then for two Scottish shows for St Andrews Celebrations. My banter was translated into Russian, and even the chef from Moscow tried his hand at making haggis (the first time I have ever seen a real stomach getting used for this purpose!)

I was across in Athens for 4 days for the Greek celebrations of St Andrews night.
350 well heeled guests turned out to this charity event. I welcomed guests with some rousing bagpipe tunes and then addressed the haggis. I also had a good tune with the band that was out for the event, the Reel Thing ceilidh band, along with their guest virtuoso fiddle player Gemma Donald.

1. Check out my youtube page for the latest video offerings. I have just put up a video of a performance we did in May, for BP, with 3 mini kilted dancers.
